CITY GUIDE: Brussels, Belgium

“What should we do in Brussels?”
“Go to Bruges”

The conversation I had nearly 15x when arriving in Brussels. Perhaps I didn’t do enough prep work before hopping on the train from London, but I had always heard amazing things about Brussels.. so why was it so hard to figure out what to do? Unless you plan on going to Bruges, I recommend traveling to Brussels the same way we did – a 24-hour train stop from London to Amsterdam.

Though I have to admit Brussels was not the most exhilarating city upon arrival, once we started exploring the city, we loved getting a taste of the culture – and by taste, I mean we literally ate our way through the city, and it was delicious! Check out our tips below on 24 hours in Brussels!

WHAT TO DO:

Grand Place – You can’t come to Brussels without visiting this beautiful square in the center of the city. This square is home to many historic buildings, restaurants, and shops.. plus it makes an incredible photo opportunity!

Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium – This was voted the best museum in Brussels, so I recommend stopping by!
Atomium – Though we did not venture out to visit the Atomium, this unique piece of architecture has served as a symbol of Brussels and Bruges since the 1958 Brussels World Fair.
Delirium Cafe – Yes, this also falls under Where to Eat, but visiting this brewery is an absolute must. The underground pub holds the world record (since 2004!) for the most beers offered around the world and currently serves almost 2500 varieties.
Les Galeries St. Hubert – As the first covered shopping arcade in Europe, this glass-roofed center is packed with cafes, shops, and theaters. I stumbled upon the most beautiful Olympia Le Tan macaroon box at Pierce Marcolini and it is such a perfect souvenir from the trip!

Le Galeries St Hubert
Manneken Pis – Since I have seen replicas of this “peeing boy” statue sold in so many Sky Mall catalogs, I was determined to see it in person (and yes, my friends made fun of me for this). Make sure you keep your eyes peeled because if you glance off along your journey, you might just miss it! Let’s just say he looks much bigger in pictures.

WHERE (AND WHAT) TO EAT:

La Quincaillerie – I definitely recommend this hardware-store-turned-restaurant for dinner with it’s delicious and ever-changing menu. This restaurant kept the original architecture with storage walls, wood paneling, and a giant clock at the top of the staircase – unique and beautiful.
Bonsoir Clara – Voted as one of the best restaurants in the city, this chic spot serves a wide variety of cuisine including Belgian, Italian, and Asian. Plus it’s located in the fashion district, so I recommend stopping by!
Waffles & Chocolate – Though you can’t leave Brussels without either of these, I recommend trying one of the chocolate waffles offered on nearly every street. OH MY GOD, so good.

French Fries – Since french fries were invented in Belgium, you have to order a plate for the full authentic experience.
Beer – Belgians love beer, so channel your inner Belgian and indulge in a few pints! Delirium (mentioned above) is definitely our recommendation, but any local pub will do the trick!
