Style Your Guy: Menswear Tips with Macy’s + Event Recap

The Perennial Style preppy sister fashion blog Dallas
A couple weeks ago, the three of us hosted the Style Your Guy event at Macy’s NorthPark. It was so fun switching up our routine and getting to spend the afternoon styling guys and sharing our favorite menswear tips. There’s no denying the Ralph Lauren section stole our hearts a bit, but we loved mixing and matching brands and helping guys find simple updates to their personal style. Check out some of our photos from the event and keep reading for a few of our menswear tips!

Though we generally (ok, most always) talk about women’s fashion on The Perennial Style, a well-dressed guy is just as important as a trendy female in our opinion. One thing is for sure, guys have their own personal style and mixing in menswear trends can sometimes be a catastrophe – so focusing on simple updates to your guy’s style can really go a long way!

A well-dressed guy isn’t just about what he’s wearing – It’s all about the fit. He can be wearing an incredible Zegna suit, but if it’s not tailored correctly, it will completely ruin the look. So rather than focusing on name brands or trends, start with the fit. Very rarely can you purchase a suit from a store without needing a bit of tailoring – If you’re that “perfect fit” guy, congrats, you win. A pinch here and a cuff there can really make or break the look. No guy wants to look like he’s borrowed a suit for his big business meeting. The tailor will become your best friend.

Now, let’s talk about trends. Since we grew up in the South, most of our guy friends prefer the preppy look – navy blazers, khakis, bow ties, and perhaps a classic North Face for the weekend. We absolutely LOVE this style, so no changes needed, BUT there’s still a way to add a little oomph to the look without changing their personal style. Here’s two of our favorite menswear looks:

A Formal Dinner Look – A navy blazer, bow tie, and khaki pants was our boarding school dress code. It was appropriate for class, college formals, church on Sundays, a nice dinner out, pretty much any occasion. From now until eternity, this is always a handsome look in our opinion! For a Dallas twist on this look, try a pairing the blazer with a pair of dark-wash jeans, leather drivers, and a button down with no tie. It’s classic with an update.

The Weekend Look – If every guy could have a wardrobe stocked of Ralph Lauren, it would be a dream. Stocking up on casual staples can make a guy well-dressed even when he’s low-key and comfortable. A classic vest layered over a plaid flannel is a great choice for a weekend in the mountains, a football tailgate, anything you name it.
