It’s easy to fill up a closet with dozens of printed blouses, colorful dresses, and trendy coats – but making sure you have the right basics for mixing and matching is always key. When I have those “I have nothing to wear days”, I always start with a column and go from there. A column is essentially the easiest outfit you can ever put on – black skinnies and a black tank top, the oh-so-basic combo that matches any and every item in your closet. It’s basically the nude skivvies and nude pumps version for winter – you have to start somewhere!

For a simple yet chic winter look, I paired my column with this classic tan pea coat and over-the-knee boots. A tan pea coat is a must for anyone, and if you are looking for an affordable one (it’s too hot in Texas this year to invest), this one is a great option – and only $33! I am wearing a size small – it runs a bit oversized, so don’t worry about going up a size when shopping!
