As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized less is more. Working in a clean and organized home makes my routine more efficient, having fewer clothes in my closet makes deciding what to wear easier, owning less “stuff” makes moving easier, and letting go of things that are no longer relevant to my life allows me to focus on the future, not the past.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, channel that energy into purging a space. Whether it’s donating clothing you no longer need or reorganizing a space in your home to feel order. If you can’t control what’s happening in your life, this is a great way to at least feel like you can control what’s physically surrounding you. Growing up, I always loved reading – but as I’ve gotten older, I find myself scrolling social media or bingeing my favorite shows more often than picking up a book. However, last summer I rediscovered my love of reading and have been through countless books since then, and it has been such a great way to relax and practice self-care.
Whether it’s a fiction novel to distract from what’s overwhelming you or a helpful biography to learn from the experiences of others to live life to the fullest, set some time aside to pick up a book to disconnect and learn something new. A little self-help is extremely beneficial for self-care.
Spend Time Doing Something That Gives You Joy
Taking time during the week to do something that gives you joy is such a rewarding form of self-care. Cooking is such a stress-relieving activity for me, so trying new recipes a couple of nights a week and spending time in the kitchen is my favorite way to end the day and learn something new.
Be Mindful
You know the expression, “stop and smell the roses”? Literally, stop and take it all in. Paying attention to your senses is a great way to ground yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Even if it’s just 15 minutes outside with a cup of coffee. Stop overthinking and take in the environment.
Notice what’s around you, savor the taste of your coffee, enjoy the fresh air. Being mindful of what is surrounding you is a quick and easy way to reground yourself and reset.
Go For A Walk Or Run
When we were younger, our dad’s answer to everything was “just go for a run.” Whether it was a breakup, stress about a test, worries about making the cheer team, he always said to go for a run. While I never understood it when I was younger, I get it now. Getting outside, taking in the fresh air, and getting some exercise is such a quick and efficient way to block out stress and reset. When I started viewing exercise as mental clarity rather than “staying in shape” it changed my entire outlook on it – and I couldn’t recommend it more!
Reevaluate Your Social Media Accounts
If you ever feel down after spending time on social media, it’s time to purge. Unfollow the accounts that negatively impact your mood, and follow accounts that provide joy or positive reinforcement for what you’re experiencing. Scrolling through a feed with inspirational content or people sharing advice on topics that may be impacting your life will brighten your day, rather than negatively impact it. Facetime Your Bestie Or Family
The one thing I’m most grateful for in my life is my amazing family and circle of girlfriends, and nothing brightens my day like catching up with the people I love the most! Hearing about their lives, laughing about memories, and just getting that quality time brings so much joy to my life and reminds me that relationships are the MOST important priority in life. Take the time to cherish those relationships.

There are times in life where we simply cannot control what is going on around us, so it’s important to remember you’re doing your best. Go easy on yourself, and be proud of yourself for how far you’ve come. Every experience in life contributes to the person you are meant to be, so when you’re feeling overwhelmed, just go day by day. Things always have a way of working out, so channeling your energy into things you CAN control and practicing self-care is the most beneficial way to navigate challenges.
