Explore Beaufort, NC: Charming Streets and Coastal Delights

Beaufort, NC is a charming fishing village dating back to 1709, making it the third oldest town in North Carolina!  Although it was initially established by the English colonists and French Huguenots seeking religious freedom, it’s bigger claim to fame came many years later during the Colonial period when Beaufort came the target for many pirate activities, including the notorious Blackbeard who frequented the area. Today, the only pirates you’ll see are the tourist reenactments, but Beaufort has been diligent about preserving its historical downtown, beautiful waterfront street, and maritime Museum.

Where to stay:

The walkability of the town is what makes Beaufort so charming, therefore, we recommend staying near the historic district.  There are many homes for rent and this one that we rented for a recent trip even came with a golf cart to our surprise! If you are not interested in renting a house, the Inlet InnPecan Tree Inn Bed and Breakfast, and the Inn on Turner are in great locations.

With Beaufort’s small-town charm, it’s a popular tourist destination, so we recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season.  Each June, there is a blue marlin fishing tournament called Big Rock that has been a draw to the area for over 60 years.  If you’re lucky, you may even see Michael Jordan roaming around town or on his boat competing with the others!

Where to eat:

  • Moonrakers– A stylish restaurant with three floors of amazing waterfront dining, serving a variety of seafood, steaks, and craft cocktails.  We loved their tuna tartar and whipped feta appetizers.
  • Ribeyes – A casual local chain featuring rib-eye steaks with baked potatoes & salad from the salad bar.
  • Aqua – A casual yet elegant spot known for its tapas-style small plates, fresh seafood, and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Front Street Grill/Rhum Bar – Offers a relaxed dining experience with waterfront views. The menu features seafood, burgers, and Southern comfort food.
  • Beaufort Grocery – A local favorite for Southern and seafood dishes, with a menu featuring items like shrimp and grits, crab bisque, and a variety of gourmet sandwiches.
  • Beaufort Café – A popular spot for breakfast and brunch, serving classic American dishes, including pancakes, omelets, and biscuits and gravy.

What to do:

  • See the wild horses on Carrot Island: You can choose to take a ferryrent a boat, kayak to the nearby island, or even head there on a floating tiki hut!
  • Slow down and enjoy ice cream while watching the boats go by.  Our favorite spots are the Beaufort Creamery and The General Store.
  • Drive to the nearby public beach at Radio Island.
  • Beaufort Pirates Revenge – Set sail on this 45 person pirate boat and see Beaufort like Blackbeard himself. These interactive voyages offer fun and adventure for families of all ages!
  • Enjoy the beautiful historic homes and buildings, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. You can choose to stroll through town and along the water’s edge, or take this cute red bus tour!
  • Farmer’s Market – Between late spring and early fall, artisans and farmers meet at the Courthouse Square from 9am-1pm. We love stopping by the market on each of our trips to grab a souvenir before heading home while supporting the local community.

How to get there:

There is not an airport in Beaufort so most people choose to drive. However, if you are coming from far away, you will need to plan on flying into one of the “nearby” airports and rent a car.

  • Raleigh/Durham Airport (RDU):
    • Located about 4 hours away from Beaufort but has many flight options and is generally the least expensive option.
  • Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN):
    • Located in New Bern, NC, about 1 hour from Beaufort.  Offers direct flights from Charlotte.
  • Albert J Ellis Airport (OAJ):
    • Located in Jacksonville, NC about 1.5 hours from Beaufort. Offers direct flights from Charlotte and Atlanta.
  • Wilmington International Airport (ILM):
    • Located in Wilmington, NC about 2 hours from Beaufort. Offers flights from major hubs including Dallas, which is why we chose this for our most recent trip.

Beaufort promises an unforgettable experience! Pack your bags and we’d love to hear your favorite things to do and see when you’re in the area!
