Meet Lucy Dang: dubbed “the Southern Vera Wang”, Lucy brings a fresh and sophisticated air of design to formalwear. Specializing in breathtaking evening gowns and feminine cocktail dresses, Lucy Dang is one designer you need to know. I had the opportunity to sit down with Lucy in her Dallas showroom to learn more about her line, the inspiration behind her designs, and steal a sneak peek at her newest collection. Not only are all of these wonderful pieces sketched locally, all of her pieces are hand-sewn in her showroom by their wonderful team. Though it was hard to choose a favorite from her line, I have to say I am absolutely in love with her evening gowns like this, this, and this! Check out our interview below to learn a bit more about this up and coming designer and click here to visit her site for more looks:
When did you decide that you wanted to become fashion designer?
I knew I wanted to be a designer at a very young age. My parents and I are originally from Vietnam. We moved over when I was two. Every Christmas, the church that sponsored us over to the states gave gifts to all the kids and I remember one year specifically. I was three and half and I received a package. Inside was this fluffy blue dress. I can remember thinking “I love this,” and that is when I knew it was meant for me.
Where are your clothes manufactured?
Dallas, TX
Where can we purchase your clothes?
Our clothes can be found in boutiques such as: Runway Couture, Eleanor Schain, and Lisa Moran to name a few. You can also find us in Belk.
Tell us about your relationship with Belk:
In 2013, we won the Belk Southern Designer Showcase, which landed us our own spot in all of the flagship stores for our Spring/Summer 2013 Lady by Lucy Dang line. The reason we won the Belk competition was because they were looking for Southern Designers that met with their branding, which is modern Southern style. Working with Belk has been a great and very educational experience. We have learned a lot from them and we will be participating in their first Trunk Show in October. We are very grateful for all they’ve done for us and with us!
What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Peruvian textiles and colors. Destination and resort theme like being on a vacation. Because I needed to get out of here and take a vacation.
Your evening gowns are absolutely stunning! Would you say this is your primary focus of your line?
Yes, we are an evening-wear company. Evening and cocktail gowns are what we love to do.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking to create their own line in the future?
Yes, Intern! Learn as much from other designers as possible and ASK QUESTIONS! And it’s important to pay your dues.
What is one piece of advice you have heard that has resonated most with you?
When you are ready to make a decision but only 60% sure, take the shot. -Colin Powell
