Designer Spotlight: Lucy Dang

Lucy Dang

Meet Lucy Dang: dubbed “the Southern Vera Wang”, Lucy brings a fresh and sophisticated air of design to formalwear. Specializing in breathtaking evening gowns and feminine cocktail dresses, Lucy Dang is one designer you need to know. I had the opportunity to sit down with Lucy in her Dallas showroom to learn more about her line, the inspiration behind her designs, and steal a sneak peek at her newest collection. Not only are all of these wonderful pieces sketched locally, all of her pieces are hand-sewn in her showroom by their wonderful team. Though it was hard to choose a favorite from her line, I have to say I am absolutely in love with her evening gowns like this, this, and this! Check out our interview below to learn a bit more about this up and coming designer and click here to visit her site for more looks:

When did you decide that you wanted to become fashion designer?

I knew I wanted to be a designer at a very young age. My parents and I are originally from Vietnam.  We moved over when I was two. Every Christmas, the church that sponsored us over to the states gave gifts to all the kids and I remember one year specifically.  I was three and half and I received a package.  Inside was this fluffy blue dress.  I can remember thinking “I love this,” and that is when I knew it was meant for me.

Where are your clothes manufactured?

Dallas, TX

Where can we purchase your clothes?

Our clothes can be found in boutiques such as: Runway Couture, Eleanor Schain, and Lisa Moran to name a few. You can also find us in Belk

Tell us about your relationship with Belk:

In 2013, we won the Belk Southern Designer Showcase, which landed us our own spot in all of the flagship stores for our Spring/Summer 2013 Lady by Lucy Dang line. The reason we won the Belk competition was because they were looking for Southern Designers that met with their branding, which is modern Southern style.  Working with Belk has been a great and very educational experience. We have learned a lot from them and we will be participating in their first Trunk Show in October. We are very grateful for all they’ve done for us and with us!

What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

Peruvian textiles and colors. Destination and resort theme like being on a vacation. Because I needed to get out of here and take a vacation.

Your evening gowns are absolutely stunning! Would you say this is your primary focus of your line?

Yes, we are an evening-wear company. Evening and cocktail gowns are what we love to do.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to create their own line in the future?

Yes, Intern! Learn as much from other designers as possible and ASK QUESTIONS! And it’s important to pay your dues.

What is one piece of advice you have heard that has resonated most with you?

When you are ready to make a decision but only 60% sure, take the shot. -Colin Powell

Must-Have Fall Jacket

Must-Have Fall Jacket

Ellen Flowers

Now that the weather is finally cooling down here in Dallas, I’m thrilled to introduce coats into my wardrobe again! Dressing for Fall is definitely one of my favorites, as styles circle around cozy classics and boots with everything! Though I love all things trendy, one thing I believe every girl needs in her closet is a versatile jacket in a classic style that can be worn for years to come.

I am loving this new belted quilt jacket from Johnston & Murphy I found this season. I paired mine with a soft flannel, my favorite skinnies, and an amazing pair of wedge booties for a casual weekend look. I also love pairing it with a fitted sweater dress, tall boots, and a printed scarf for a dressier look! Click here to snag my new must-have Fall jacket and see how I styled my look below:

Lela rose shift dress

A bold print on a classic shape is one of my favorite ways to add a little pop into my look. I love investing in designer pieces that will not go out of style, but can still be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion. Last night I paired one of my favorite Lela Rose dresses with a bold statement necklace, a classic black stiletto, and a bright orange clutch to pull out the warm tones of the fabric for the Red Cross YPA kickoff party at Hotel ZaZa. The Must-Have Blouse

The Must-Have Blouse

Wrap Blouse and Denim Shorts

Wrap blouses are a classic and feminine trend that works well on every figure and can be worn on any occasion. I snagged this Nasty Gal wrap blouse before my trip, and it has definitely gotten its fair shares of wear since then! The feminine fabric makes it the perfect top to dress up or dress down, and I loved pairing it with distressed denim cutoffs for a casual look around the city. Missguided Grid Print Dress

When the term “shift dress” comes to mind I immediately imagine a conservative and classic structured dress. Though this is often the case, I have developed a new obsession with Missguided’s shift dress section (well.. all of their dresses for that matter), which contain a wide array of styles from classic to modern, structured to slouchy. This checked shift I snagged for my recent trip is one of my newest favorites. The shape is extremely comfortable and perfect for those relaxed afternoons, and the shirt sleeve tie waist totally embraces my favorite 90s trend. I paired this dress with my platform boots and mirrored aviators for a casual daytime look.
