Colorado has always been one of my favorite places to visit in the states, as it offers so many different outdoor adventures for every time of year. I always grew up skiing in cities like Aspen or Vail, but ever since my best friend moved to Denver a couple years ago, I’ve loved hopping on a flight to visit every chance I can get! Last summer we had a blast camping through the mountains, and I’m so excited for our next adventure in the upcoming weeks!
While there are so many cities that top my Colorado favorites list, I love exploring new places throughout the state! Earlier this summer, I attended one of the most beautiful weddings at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs with some of my favorite Dallas sisters (note: coming from a family of three sisters, I am totally drawn to friends with the same family dynamic). I have to say, Colorado Springs was never really on my radar prior to this trip – BUT I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to visit again – especially The Broadmoor! (If any brides are looking for a destination wedding spot in the states, this wedding was stunning and I highly recommend the location!)
Keep reading for the top five things to do when you visit Colorado Springs:
THE BROADMOOR
My sister, Blair, has been telling me for years we need to plan a weekend getaway with the family here, and after visiting, I definitely understood why. The Broadmoor reminds me so much of a Colorado version of The Greenbrier – our favorite hotel to visit as a family. The Broadmoor is a historic resort that was originally built 100 years ago, and it’s situated around its own private lake and golf course with picturesque mountain views. From the countless restaurants to the luxurious spa, this five-star hotel should definitely be on your travel list! (If you’re looking for a good time, be sure to hit up The Golden Bee one night for a super fun piano bar within the resort)
GARDEN OF THE GODS
Following the wedding, Allison and I decided to plan an active day of hiking and exploring! The first stop on our list was Garden of the Gods, a registered National Natural Landmark in Colorado Springs. There are 15 miles of trails within the park to explore the red rock formations, and it was such a beautiful (and beginner-friendly) place to explore! I recommend stopping by the nearby visitors center to pick up a quick map to plan your route!
SEVEN FALLS
Following our hike at Garden of the Gods, we planned a dinner at Restaurant 1858 at Seven Falls. The short hike to dinner was absolutely breathtaking, and the restaurant had some of the best views! Seven Falls was also recognized as one of the best “International Waterfalls” by National Geographic. From hiking to ziplining, Seven Falls is a must-visit. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, be sure to hike the super steep 224 step staircase for some of the best views around!
CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN ZOO
Apart from hiking, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo should definitely be on your list. While we didn’t have time to visit this one, our friends visited and said it was amazing! Since this is the only zoo in the US on a mountain, you have the option to take a chair lift up the mountain for an aerial view of the animals. Such a unique experience.
PIKES PEAK
While you can catch a glimpse of Pikes Peak from Garden of the Gods, plan a day to explore what many refer to as “America’s Mountain”. You can take the world’s highest cog train (since 1891) for a three-hour adventure up the mountain, or you can drive or hike your way up to the top.
Whether you’re planning a Colorado road trip or simply looking for a quick weekend getaway, I highly recommend booking a weekend at The Broadmoor and exploring the outdoors of Colorado Springs!
