The Fives Downtown: A Mid-Century Modern Boutique Hotel In Playa Del Carmen

Vamos a la playa! 

What I love the most about Mexico is that every visit is shaped around where you stay. You can book a luxurious all-inclusive resort and never leave the property, an eco-friendly beachside hut in Tulum and beach hop from boutique hotel to boutique hotel, or you can rent a lavish home and enjoy fine dining and service by your own personal chef. The opportunities are endless, and no matter how many times I visit, I always have a unique experience. 

THE CURIO COLLECTION

While I have traveled to Playa del Carmen many times, my stay at The Fives Downtown in the hip Quinta Avenida was such an amazing experience. This 93-room boutique hotel is a part of the Hilton’s Curio Collection, so I felt confident the property would be amazing before I arrived. If you’re not familiar with the Hilton’s Curio Collection, it’s their smaller collection of trendy, boutique hotels. Each property is unique and pulls in so many of the elements of the destination they’re located – so you have a unique experience each time, and you won’t find any cookie-cutter hotel rooms within Curio!

THE LOCATION

What makes The Fives Downtown so great is the prime location. The property is situated just two blocks from the beach and is surrounded by local shops and markets, perfect for picking up artisan items to take home with you. In addition, it’s a short walk to the lively downtown area packed with restaurants, shopping, and nightlife – close enough to enjoy, without the noise and chaos at night! 

The Fives Downtown is just a short 45 minutes from the Cancun Airport. If you rent a car, the hotel offers valet for $25 a night – However, unless you plan to tack on another hotel like this one in Cancun or head to Tulum after, a taxi or Uber will be the easiest option, since you will likely walk most of your stay!

THE CUISINE

The hotel is surrounded by so many amazing restaurants, from casual beachside grills to fine dining. However, you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy a fabulous meal thanks to the property’s wide variety of dining options. Start your morning at Marley’s Coffee Shop for a light breakfast and cold brew, enjoy a poolside lunch at Purobeach on the hotel’s rooftop, spend your happy hour at el Tigre and explore the 100 different types of tequila and mezcal, then head down to Mercatto for a delicious Italian-influenced dinner!

THE ROOMS AND SUITES

As you check into your room, you’re greeted with bright and vibrant mid-century modern decor. For my stay, I upgraded to a suite – and I highly recommend this! My suite was huge with a full-sized kitchen, 6-person dining table, living room with floor to ceiling windows with a patio overlooking the beach, and a spacious bedroom and bathroom. I never wanted to leave! 

 *Note: While all of the rooms will be perfect for your stay, be sure to request an exterior room to enjoy the views, as the hotel also offers interior rooms that overlook the lobby’s courtyard. 

PUROBEACH & ROOFTOP POOL

While the hotel is not located directly on the beach (only 2-blocks behind), I spent all of my days relaxing poolside by the hotel’s rooftop infinity pool. Book a cabana and order lunch from Purobeach for the ultimate day of R&R. After a day by the pool, head back to the rooftop for tropical cocktails and enjoy the amazing sunset views before heading to a night out on Fifth Avenue. The views cannot be beat!
